HCNL Newsletter March 2018

Dear alumni and members,

I just got back from the 2018 Harvard Alumni Leadership Conference in Cambridge, where HCNL was invited to share its app in a TEDx presentation. We are very proud that the app was very well received and will likely serve as a prototype for other Alumni Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs), both in the US and worldwide! If you have not downloaded our Harvard Club of the Netherlands app in the app store yet, please do so!

This year’s conference saw over 215 alumni leaders and guests from 81 Clubs, 23 SIGs, and 6 HAA Alumni Contacts including over 75 international attendees and 73 first time attendees, connect with each other and reconnect with Harvard.

Also, Drew Faust gave a very inspiring departure interview (see picture above). Thank you Drew Faust and welcome Lawrence S. Bacow, one of the most experienced and respected leaders in American higher education, as Harvard’s 29th president!

This month, we have some fun and interesting events for you on our agenda. For more details, please read on.

We hope you will join us!

On behalf of the HCNL Board,

Laura K. Birkman

Tour of Gazing Ball by Jeff Koons in De Nieuwe Kerk: Sunday 18 March

Please join us for a tour of De Nieuwe Kerk’s 2018 Masterpiece: Gazing Ball. The work is from the Gazing Ball Paintings series by American artist Jeff Koons (b. 1955), which began in 2014. Gazing Ball (Perugino Madonna and Child with Four Saints) is a wondrous combination of a handpainted version of Madonna and Child with Four Saints (1500-01) by Italian Renaissance painter Perugino and a smooth cobalt-blue glass ball.

The Nieuwe Kerk Masterpiece series presents works of art so extraordinary that they are almost never loaned out, because of their fragility or their status as beloved favourites. Many of the works featured in the series have an obvious or unexpected religious or spiritual dimension. Each one is a work that calls for contemplation and introspection and dazzles visitors in the breath-taking surroundings of De Nieuwe Kerk’s gothic interior.

Date: Sunday 18 March
Time: Meet at the entrance of De Nieuwe Kerk at 15:30. Private tour from 16:00 – 16:45. Thereafter a drink (on own account) from 16:45 – 18:00 at the Cafe adjacent to De Nieuwe Kerk.
Location: De Nieuwe Kerk, Dam, Amsterdam
Open to: Harvard alumni and Ivy Circle members.
Registration: Please sign up before 15 March to c.demeyere@inter.nl.net on a first come first serve basis. Places are limited.
Price: EUR 19 without Museum Jaarkaart and EUR 10 with Museum Jaarkaart p.p. Please wire the fee before 15 March after you have received a confirmation from Carine to: Harvard Club of the Netherlands, NL66 TRIO 0198 487 622, stating your name and “Jeff Koons”.

We hope you’ll join us!

Egon Zehnder / INSEAD / Ivy Circle Women Career Advancement event: Thursday 22 March

Dear female alumni,

We hope you had a great start to 2018! We are very much looking forward to a year filled with alumni activities.

Recently, the Ivy Circle Women’s Networks met with the INSEAD Women’s Network and discussed ideas to start and strengthen our partnership to leverage the mutual strength and positive energy of the networks, both vibrant hubs of diverse female talent in business and society. We discussed some concrete starting points and ideas to facilitate mutual support, relevant connections and inspirations at Moments that Matter to women in the networks.

As part of this initiative, it’s a great pleasure to announce our first collaboration. Ivy Group female Alumni are kindly invited to attend the Women Career panel discussion and drinks kindly hosted by Egon Zehnder (Zuidas Amsterdam) on March 22, 2018. It’s also a great opportunity to meet the inspiring and diverse group of INSEAD female Alumni.

INSEAD alumna Birgit van Kalleveen and alumnus Bart Blommers have kindly offered to be our hosts and sparring partners. The event will kick off with an introduction talk by Egon Zehnder about career planning and personal branding, including a model to look at career potential. This will be followed with an elaborate panel discussion for which we have found three inspiring panelists who will answer all your questions!

· Janneke Niessen, serial entrepreneur an co-initiator at Inspiring Fifty (a pan-European programme that aims to increase diversity in the tech sector), also board member at Unicef, RVO and FutureNL
· Francine van Dierendonck, CEO at Xenos and previously Chief Digital at Philips and Marketing Director at eBay
· Valerie Heeremans-Niedersüss (MBA’10D), Head of Digital Acceleration at Heineken and previously in various roles at Google

We will end the event with celebratory drinks and a further opportunity to exchange experiences in an informal setting.
